Tuesday Adventures

I'm loving this idea already. This past weekend I got excited on Sunday night, knowing that on Tuesday  I could spend an unlimited amount of time wandering around the world and getting lost. After debating over a few places to visit, I decided to go back to Dawes Arboratum, which I visited last summer for the first time. Last summer's visit was kind of a weird one, because it was the day after a HUGE storm (which I now know was called a derecho) blew through Ohio. Driving to Dawes was tricky enough, because going through the small town that it's in was like driving through an obstacle course... tree branches, power lines, pieces of houses, you name it, it was everywhere. Then when I got there, the place was pretty much torn apart. I'm guessing half of the workers that were there trying to clean everything up weren't even supposed to be there. There were even portapotties that had been turned upside down.

This summer's visit was much more peaceful. It was a beautiful sunny day, there weren't that many people there, everything was just perfect. Just thinking about it right now makes me want to go back. The grounds are so diverse, with everything from a Japanese garden to farmland to a redwood forest to open fields full of wildflowers... and woods. I put in my headphones, got lost in the music, and got lost at Dawes, for almost four hours. Here are some of the things I saw:

Now where to go next Tuesday...

Random Obsessions

One of the first Etsy shops to make me stop dead in my tracks was Raceytay Fine Art Photography. Tracey's photos are pure magic and the moods she creates are like something out of a dream. Don't even get me started on her eye for color. But aaaaaanyway, I stop by her shop fairly frequently to take in the delicious inspiration and this week I was browsing her photo sets. My absolute favorite set is this one, showcasing the beauty of the four seasons:

Four seasons photography gift set by Raceytay.

Gorgeous right?? While browsing through these, a thought occurred to me... why have I not put together photos as sets before? I created one set with four fair photos that just kind of went together, and sold a few right away. So why not play with the, oh, 2200 photos I have saved in my Adobe library? Thus, a new obsession was born. Here are some of the groupings I have created so far (all are available in my etsy shop):

Spring Rain

The Ocean Enchanted

Little Wishes

Ad Centrum Mundi

Arabesque

Heaven and Earth
I did a pretty good job of littering my Facebook page with these as I finished them... I get randomly very excited about new projects like this. It was like I was seeing the same photos I've looked at thousands of times in a completely new light. Yay for new obsessions :)

Tuesday Adventures

It occurred to me several times over the course of this past year that I probably took more day trips with my camera last year, even though 40-50 hours of my weeks were occupied by my day job. What the heck. At that time, the little trips were kind of like an escape from reality, which is maybe why I did it so much more often back then. Since reality nowadays is pretty cool and there is no need to escape from it.

I have wanted to go to the Holden Arboratum (it's almost a three hour drive from Columbus) for over a year now. Ever since I visited Dawes Arboratum last summer (you can read about it HERE), I have wanted to explore every place similar to it within a reasonable driving distance. I've been meaning to make it a once a week (at least!) ritual for oh, eleven months now? Better late than never right?

So yesterday, Tuesday Adventures was born. Why Tuesday? Because back when I was working, we would joke about how Tuesdays were the worst day of the week. At least Mondays are supposed to be awful, because it's Monday. But what about Tuesday? It was awful in a different kind of way. Not anymore. Now that is Adventure Day. It's important to take time out of your week for yourself. Go outside. Talk a walk. Feel the breeze in your hair. There are always going to be things on your mind that you "should" be doing (especially if you are trying to support your own business), but sometimes you need to turn your mind off, even if it's only for an hour or so, and relax. Do something fun. Go on an adventure.

Holden was no disappointment. I scream sang Tori Amos (found my old From the Chiorgirl Hotel CD in my car) for the last hour of the drive because I was so excited. It was completely cloudy and overcast at first, and thank the lord I brought a sweatshirt because it was actually chilly and felt more like fall than summer.

Within a couple of hours, when I was wandering around deep in the woods, the sun started to come out. Even as an adult, the woods are still magical to me. When I was young, we had woods in our back yard. We weren't allowed to play in them due to several reasons (a creek we weren't allowed to go in, poison sumac, other scary things that can be found in the woods). Plus to get into them you had to go down this huge hill that was covered in plants and trees and skunk cabbage so they weren't even really accessible... unless you entered from the neighbor's yard. I have two younger brothers and sometimes the three of us would "go on a tour," which meant we would wait until our mom was not looking out of the kitchen window (sorry mom if you are reading this) and run into the woods via our neighbor's yard. The thrill of being someplace we weren't allowed to be plus the natural magic of the woods? It was one of my favorite things to do and was honestly like our own private kingdom. Kind of makes me sad to think that a lot of kids nowadays would rather visit magical lands in video games instead of doing what we did back in the 80's, when kids were just kids. There was no Netflix, no iPads, no XBox. Just bikes, roller skates, sidewalk chalk, the woods.

Here are some of the things that I saw on my first Tuesday Adventure:

There were so many different kinds of flowers. The air smelled unreal. I'm smiling just thinking about it.

I hiked a trail down into a little valley and found this stream at the bottom. I sat on a rock right in the middle of it for a while, just listening and being present.

There was a huge field of these, about two feet taller than me!

The sun started coming out when I was deep in the woods, leaking light onto the trail.

It was so incredibly quiet, except for the sounds of birds and the leaves in the wind.

Lookin' good, Holden Arboratum.

Tons of "frog pads," as I called them when I was little.

The perfect summer day.

I discovered that I have a random obsession with Queen Anne's lace. Who knew.

Water droplets caught up in a spider web. Spiders terrify me. This is beautiful.

The bench under this willow tree was like something out of a dream.

Fields upon fields of wildflowers. Love.

I am already looking forward to next Tuesday :)

How do you measure a year?

I am going to pre-apologize if this gets rambly and nostalgic and disjointed. Those words describe my thought process right now - just a big mess of words that I am trying to form into coherent ideas.

Here it is, August 1. I know everyone always says this at the beginning of a new month, but I really can't believe it's August. Then when driving home from the store tonight (while feeling super sad and angsty because this has just not been a good week) it dawned on me that one year ago today I was choking on my words trying to tell my boss that I was quitting. Standing there, knees shaking, heart pounding so hard that you could probably see my shirt moving, voice shaking.

I had spent the entire two and a half years prior to that measuring my life one week at a time, by how many days there were until the weekend. I would measure weeks by how long we had until some sort of holiday that gave us an extra day off of work. I'd measure days by how many hours there were until work was over, or by how many times I'd lose it on a coworker for no reason because my sheer misery had turned me into this constantly angry witch who woke up in a bad mood by default. I'd drive home thinking about how many hours I had to myself before having to go back there.

It was a different story back when I was a bartender, there wasn't so much measuring. I'd usually just measure my weeks by how many shifts I had until rent was due, or by how many nights of partying I could string in a row. Or by how many crazy stories I would emerge from those nights with (and there were a lot. those were the days).

Even further back, like in college? Probably even less measuring still. Maybe by how many days there were until a final, or days until the quarter was over. But I remember that every day was fun, and it wasn't spent constantly looking forward to something in the future. It seems like that all changes when people grow up and get jobs. Why are people completely okay with trading in an "enjoy every day" attitude for the idea that you are supposed to get a job that you don't like, because that is the responsible thing to do and because that's what it means to grow up, and live for the weekends? Why are people okay with doing something that, well, sucks... for the majority of their waking hours in each day and the majority of days in their week?

This past year has been measured pretty differently, and it still astonishes me to this day. There is no Sunday night dread or Monday morning blues. Wednesday is no different than Friday, Saturday is still awesome, but Tuesday is too. In the beginning my weeks were measured by how many bills were overdue, or by how many ramen noodle meals one person could possibly eat without going insane. But even on the days that I was using change I had found in my pockets to put $2 worth of gas in my car, the feeling that I was doing the right thing never wavered. I had my freedom and making art was my job and there is simply not a price that I'd ever pay to turn that in. I had stopped measuring, because every day was as beautiful as the one before it, and I knew the next one would be more beautiful still.

This week has been tricky, because it has been one of those "when it rains it pours" kind of weeks, and it has made me do a lot of thinking. What I keep telling myself is that you can't always control the situations you come into, but you can control how you perceive them, how you react, and what you take from it. You are constantly in control of your feelings and your own attitude, which make up your situation and ultimately your life. I think people forget this way too often, which is why they settle for spending 40+ hours a week working dead end soul-sucking jobs. Or why spilling coffee on their shirt in the morning is just the beginning of a day from hell. Maybe this makes no sense at all... but I just wish people would remember that they are in control.

See? Rambly. This is what happens when I get emotionally exhausted. I just feel like ever since my plane landed in Columbus on Thursday night there has been a constant shitstorm overhead. Things included but not limited to: relationship changes, a strange eye disease that had me convinced for three hours Monday morning that I was going blind, being accused of copying a photographer that I admire greatly, which resulted in several hurtful things being said about my work (that was a pretty big blow. all good now.), then this morning one of my closest friends in the world woke up to find his kitty laying under a dresser, no longer breathing. If I could make a list of lessons learned this week, it would look something like this:

-Be grateful for your health. You sometimes don't think about it until its been compromised.
-You have to let some stuff roll off your back, even though it's not usually easy to.
-Haters gonna hate. You always have the option to rise above it.
-Hug your loved ones tight, as often as possible. This includes furry loved ones.
-Find joy in small things. You'd be surprised how many you can find when you're looking.

I went to the fair this week and took some pictures. When I edited them I thought about how magical the fair was when I was little, and wanted to create that mood:

I love the fair. Kinda bummed that fair week was the same as my "tricky week," since I look forward to it every year, but what can you do. It was still fun, I pet the sheep, watched baby chicks hatch, and ate deep fried oreos. Does life get any better than that?

Lastly, I would like to give some love to Fuzz the kitty, who was fiercely loyal to his dude Jayme, had a mane like a lion, and loved to be knocked over on purpose. You are going to be missed, big Fuzz.

And yes, this cat is 100% as awesome as he looks. Hope everyone has a wonderful August.

Bohemian Vibes & Summertime

My creativity must be super-charged by the sunshine because I cannot make my pencil move fast enough lately. Days of sketching by the pool, evenings walking by the river, just being outside as much as possible... I love summer. I love how everything seems to move more slowly, more peacefully. And that it's still light outside at 10pm, making staying up until the wee hours of the morning way too easy. Summer makes me want to put flowers in my hair and play in the woods. Like every single day. It really brings out the bohemian in all of us, doesn't it?

I've been on a particularly powerful creative tear since the 4th of July. Columbus does their big fireworks display on the 3rd, and of course I went out with friends afterwards, so the 4th was a good day to recover and lose myself in creation. That's how these new prints were born:

"The Incredible Journey"

"Voyager II"

"Voyager I"

A few weeks ago, I started to form a crazy idea. An idea that has been floating around in my head for a while now, but has never really been more than an idea. Driving the Pacific Coast Highway is on my bucket list. I've never seen the Pacific Ocean. The only part of California I have been to is the part that hits Nevada at Heavenly ski resort in South Lake Tahoe. I've never been to Oregon, never been to Washington. I have wanted to see the Oregon coast ever since I was little, inspired by the greatest movie of all time: The Goonies (it's my favorite, don't judge!). The one year anniversary of quitting my job is fast-approaching, and you only live once right? After researching costs and realizing it would be much cheaper to do it with someone else, I mentioned it to my friend Amber one day on a whim. And she said she was interested!!

I couldn't believe it. Now, we still have a ton to figure out, but I want to make this happen. We are talking about flying into LAX, renting a car, then just making our way up to Seattle. Has anyone done this before? Any recommendations on what to see and where to stop? Where to eat? Once we figure out the travel arrangements, picking out all of the fun stuff will be the best part. Just thinking about it is making me want to jump out of my chair.

Oh summer, how you inspire me. And to think this is just the beginning :)

Coming Back To Blogger

After trying to adjust to the new blog format of my website (then getting frustrated and not feeling the same closeness of the Blogger community), I am moving my blog back over here. I miss Blogger. I miss being able to see what everyone is doing and blog hop and all that good stuff. It just feels like home here... maybe because this is where I started out, rambling about dreams and art and all things good and true :) Here are some photos of what I have been up to lately...
Lucy is still large and in charge.
I've been taking walks every evening that it has been nice outside and just taking in all the small, beautiful things that oftentimes might get overlooked.
I've been feeling very inspired by music lately and am getting back into playing the piano.
I, um, inherited a white wine fridge from some neighbors that moved out... just in time for summer :)
Pippa is still a little hellion and tests my patience on a daily basis. And I love her for it.
'Tis thunderstorm season... and you can usually find me hiding under a blanket in the fetal position. So scary!

I planted my garden with my mom in May and everything has been growing like crazy!
My friend Laura is having a baby (due September)... She is my first close friend to have a baby. I cannot stop buying stuff for him :)

And of course there are the usual summer things that I have been looking forward to since our winter that did not end... sketching by the pool, painting late into the night with the windows open, concerts, festivals, and wine on the porch. Summertime and the living's easy. I've been crazy busy with freelance projects lately (yay!!!) but have also found time to make an abundance of new work, with more on the way! Something about the sunshine turns my inspiration and creative energy up about 1000 notches :)

Hope all is well with everyone out there. It already feels better to be back here :)

New Website & Blog!

Oh my lord, where has the time gone? Just wanted to let everyone know real quick that I have been hard at work at a new website. Okay, by hard at work I actually mean obsessively working on it every chance I get because I just want it finished. It's almost there, complete with a portfolio, shop section, and blog, which is where this blog will be permanently moved. I figured out how to import all of the posts and comments, and am still trying to figure out how to redirect this blog to the new one.

So, moving forward, you can find my blog at: http://www.jenndalyn.com/blog

Anyone follow Alisa Burke's blog and/or Instagram? I follow both and am continuously in awe of her. She has a young daughter, busy life, yet always finds time to create really thoughtful and meaningful blog posts. I've been inspired to take my blog in a similar direction of hers, where lots of inspiration, photos, and overall lovely things will be shared on a (hopefully) very regular basis. Some of my ideas include sharing pages from the many weirdo books I have in my library (I love collecting unusual books!), my weekly favorite photos found on Tumblr, taking at least one walk (to anywhere!) each week and posting photos, and on Sundays posting my art journal pages for the week. The desire to have a somewhat set schedule is still surprising me!

Life is great, and it's almost SPRING! One of my favorite times of the year. I cannot wait to start going on adventures with my camera, capturing the new signs of life.

Oh, and on Friday (March 22) I will be turning 30! It's really hard to believe. While it seems like most people freak out and say they are 29 for the next few years, I'm very excited about my 30's. All the hard stuff is out of the way. Now it's time to just live.

Hope all is well with everyone and hope to see everyone at my "new" blog! :)
